Trauma Healing and Expression
I’ve seen the important connection between healing and expression first hand. Everyone experiences grief and trauma at some point in their life. Having the ability to express these painful periods makes the agony bearable and survivable. I believe healing from any trauma is limited without some kind of outlet of creative expression, or a more positive spin is, great healing is possible with creative expression.
One of the most common traits I share with fellow early developmental trauma and PTSD peeps is a difficulty expressing. If that’s the case for you, most of the time at some point it was unsafe to express yourself and your true feelings. We learn to hide and lock away our natural expression so as not to invite even more attack, negativity, and criticism, protecting what we cherish and hold dear.
An incredible amount of healing came for me personally when I finally had the right support and felt confident enough to express myself through more than words, in my case art (painting and drawing). Much of what needed to come out was wordless and the more that came out, the easier the words became.
Part of why I so enthusiastically encourage creativity and expression is because I know the power of that kind of support. People change when you listen and see them for who they are. Creative expression gives the opportunity to release what’s been frozen and incredibly what was once painfully stuck becomes free.
Art is a valued expression of the soul. I celebrate all creativity!
Thank you.
